Prerequisites for Coaching

Personal coaching has never been more needed than it is today. There is an urgent need to rescue toxic and failing relationships, the relationship of man with himself, with spouse, with children, with relatives and with God. If, during these times of stress, competition, frustration, and low tolerance, the disturbed individual is able to find immediate help in the form of an empathetic and caring coach who will give him a ‘hand up’, many disasters can be averted.

For a successful coaching relationship, following three essential conditions need to be fulfilled:

  1. Dissatisfaction with the status quo: The client must be unhappy with the current situation and identify something as a problem. Many people who are dissatisfied, and even seem to suffer, are in denial about having a problem.
  2. Accept personal responsibility to change: The client must accept the personal responsibility of changing one’s life for good. Many people admit having problems but feel that that’s the way the life is and that nothing can be done about it. Many others believe that it is the coach’s responsibility try changing him or her.
  3. A willingness to do whatever it takes to change: This is crucial in distinguishing people who change from those who don’t, and this is what finally determines the success or failure of coaching relationship.

Thus the objective of coaching is to get the client to understand that the locus of control is within, to motivate the client to take responsibility for his/her contribution to his/her situation, and to thus get the client to fully participate in his/her own healing and work towards a harmonious life.
